New year, new job

Dan Calarco named associate vice president for Client Services and Support

Dan Calarco, who for the past seven years has served as chief of staff for the Office of the Vice President for IT and CIO, is heading into the new year with a new job.

He will take the reins as associate vice president for Client Services and Support beginning January 1, 2021, after a national search.

“Dan has masterfully served as OVPIT chief of staff since 2013, served as the OVPIT ombudsman, and worked collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students across a breadth of IT efforts, projects, and initiatives at IU,” said Rob Lowden, vice president for IT and CIO, in an email to staff. “Please join me in congratulating Dan on his new role as associate vice president of Client Services and Support.”

Calarco succeeds Cathy O’Bryan, who was AVP of the division from 2017 to October 2020, when she accepted the role of Unizin chief executive officer. Momi Ford had been serving as interim Client Services and Support AVP since O’Bryan’s departure.

“Momi’s leadership, dedication and passion have been indispensable during the fall semester amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic,” Lowden said. “Momi’s knowledge and experience with the Client Services and Support division are a testament to our strength in leadership and we are grateful for her continued contributions.”

Calarco brings a unique skill set to the position. As chief of staff, he worked as a senior advisor to two vice presidents for IT and CIO and served on the VPIT cabinet. Highlights include:

  • Chairing the IT Incident Management Team Executive Policy Group, where he served as COVID-19 IT incident commander, overseeing the IT response for IU’s move from in-person to remote learning in March.
  • Chairing the SafeIT taskforce, where he led the team that implemented two-factor authentication for IU’s 160,000 faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, and students, reducing annual compromised accounts by over 99 percent.
  • Drafting and contributing to the founding documents for several of IU’s collaborations, including Unizin, the OmniSOC, and Kuali.co.

“It’s my honor to be named to this leadership role, and I look forward to implementing several goals and action items in the IT Tactical Plan,” Calarco said. “But first, I’d like to thank Cathy and Momi for building a world-class client services and support organization that I get to inherit. I look forward to building upon the foundation they have set.
